Basic Macrame Plant Hanger DIY

Macrame Plant Hammock

Featured: Syngonium ‘Berry Allusion’ Arrowhead Plant

Don’t have a good spot near the window to set a plant? Utilizing vertical space may be a great option for you! These macrame plant hangers are a fun and quick craft project, with lots of room for creativity. I love using them for trailing and vining plants, such as Pothos or Philodendron Micans, but they also work great for Ric Rac Cactus and other varieties.

You can add an additional layer of detail with beadwork, fancy knots, or even try ombre dip-dying. But before I get carried away, let me show you how to make a quick classic.

First measure and cut your cording if you have not done so already.

  1. Line up the ends of all four 50in long cords so that they are even

  2. Pull them through your ring until you reach the halfway point.

  3. Take one of your 15in long cords, and fold about 3in of one end back, making a small loop. Hold the loop about 2in from the bottom of your ring, and wrap the longer tale around your main cords. Working downward and not crossing over previous wraps, continue until you have about ½ an inch left (you’ll get about 5 wraps around). Slide the loose tail through the exposed loop that you almost completely covered. You now have a finished upper section. Now on to the basket!

  4. Measure down about 9in and tie sets of two strands, totaling 4 knots.

- Optional: thread on beads at this step before tying your knots.

5. Come down about 3in and tie adjacent strands.

6. Straighten out your ends, and measure 3 1/2in down from your last knot. Tie all 8 together using the same method as before with your second 15in cord.

7. Trim bottom tassel evenly and stick a plant in it, you’re done!

I typically use removable metal S-Hooks to hang my plants on curtain rods and other areas of the house. It makes it easier to move them around, dust, and prune the leaves.
