How to Make Your Own Monstera Potting Mix

Why mix potting soil when I can just buy the bag with the picture of a monstera on it at the store?

I thought the same thing, until I realized how sensitive monsteras are root rot… Each time I get a new monstera variety, or repot one of my old favorites, I always spend a little extra time making sure that the soil can drain freely.

Monsteras are ephiphitic, meaning they like growing on or near trees. So including

a coarse orchid bark makes them feel right at home.

Airy Monstera Blend Soil Mixture Recipe

To make a high quality monstera blend soil, mix:

  • 2 Cups Orchid Bark (the mix that includes charcoal is nice)

Here’s the one I use: Better-Gro Phalaenopsis Mix - Premium Grade Phalaenopsis Potting Mix for Potting, Repotting, Enhanced Drainage, Air Flow & Root Ventilation - 8 Dry Quarts

  • 4 Cups Low moisture Indoor Potting Soil

Here’s the one I use: Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix - 6 qt., 2-Pack

  • 1 Cup Perlite

You can half the amount for a small batch, or make the full amount and store any extra in a cool, dry place. This blend is also great for any plants in the philodendron family, and Pothos also love it. Most tropical plants will do well in this blend, as it has good drainage for water lovin’ varieties.

That’s it, short & simple. Having soil amendments & knowing how to use them is an awesome indicator you’ve upgraded in your plant difficulty level.
